HEY, I'M IFY!
I started refereeing elementary school basketball to help me pay down my law school debt and still have fun. Instead, I quit every weekend, lol. But eventually, I fell in love with the craft.Â
I would be introduced to the book, Chop Wood, Carry Water, during the early days of my officiating career, and, at the lowest points in my career, I would read the book daily. Â
What I didn't know at the time was that refereeing and the book were teaching me a serious life lesson: focus on the process and detach from the outcome.Â
One day it finally clicked. I wasted so much time focusing on things outside of my control - game schedules, tournament assignments, who liked me and who didn't - that my negativity had completely eaten away at my love for officiating.Â
I vowed that day, I would mind my business.
From that point forward, I built systems that would allow me to focus on my own business: a personal brand, a growth game plan, and a mental performance routine so I could show up on the court as the best version of MYSELF, focused on the process and not the outcome.Â
Over the last several years, I tested a series of creative strategies in officiating that no one even mentions, but I can personally say I have been in awe of the results ever since. What happened was predictable and my anxiety plummeted. Now, I am sharing with you what I have learned as an official, an attorney, and a person simply trying to navigate officiating successfully and on my own terms...with joy, patience, presence, and unrelenting persistence.Â
